Q1 2026 China-Europe Rail Freight Operations Brief

In Q1 2026, China-Europe rail freight services continued their robust growth trajectory, with sustained improvements in transport volume, corridor capacity, and service quality. From January to February, approximately 3,500 trains were dispatched nationwide, representing a year-on-year increase of over 30%, with around 350,000 TEU of cargo shipped. Overall market demand showed a clear recovery, and rail transport further strengthened its competitiveness within the China-Europe logistics system.

In terms of corridor structure, the central corridor centered on Erenhot performed notably well, with over 1,100 trains dispatched in Q1, a year-on-year increase exceeding 20%. It has gradually transformed from a supplementary corridor into a major trunk route. Meanwhile, multiple growth points emerged nationwide, with key hub cities including Chengdu, Chongqing, Xian, Tianjin, Changsha, and Wuhan all maintaining strong growth momentum. The China-Europe rail network is accelerating toward a multi-hub, wide-coverage development model.

Regarding cargo composition, the range of goods transported continued to optimize in Q1, primarily including new energy vehicles, auto parts, electronics, home appliances, machinery, high-end equipment, photovoltaic products, textiles and apparel, daily consumer goods, and chemical products. Overall, the share of high-value-added goods continues to rise, indicating that China-Europe rail services are gradually upgrading from a traditional transport supplement to a vital corridor serving mid-to-high-end manufacturing.

Additionally, with the advancement of smart port initiatives, paperless customs clearance, and the Railway Express Customs Clearance policy, customs efficiency has improved significantly, and overall train operations have become more stable and efficient.

In summary, China-Europe rail freight achieved parallel growth in both scale and quality in Q1 2026, and has established itself as a vital overland transport corridor connecting China-Europe trade.
